managing family paper flow

Bills, solicitations, junk mail. The amount of paper that piles up in our homes is disconcertingly large, but put a few simple organizing principles to work, and the deluge becomes instantly manageable. According to Chris Plantan, owner of the Russell + Hazel office products company, the first step is to set up a filing system. Sort mail as soon as it arrives, discarding junk mail and placing the rest into a permanent storage space or a temporary pile. Commercial warming trays (available in restaurant supply stores) make perfect temporary storage spots, and magazine holders are just the place for catalogs. Use binders to keep schedules, medical papers, and children's school and art work. File boxes or archival storage boxes can serve as permanent storage solutions, and it's always a good idea to have dividers to separate working files.

To aid in stemming the buildup of paper, try to refrain from writing notes on scraps; instead, use notebooks or a dry erase board. Don't print out all your e-mails, just the essential ones—the rest can find a home in computer folders. And to keep your home uncluttered, dedicate time each week to organize.
