book clubs

  Idea

Book clubs have experienced a renaissance lately. But is "The Kite Runner" really so absorbing? Or do we simply need an excuse to have a little fun with our friends? Literature certainly isn't the only pretext for a social gathering. We offer a few choice ways to mix it up next time your club convenes.

1. Take break from that best seller and make cocktails and snacks the main event. An occasional hors d'oeuvres-and-martini party delivers all the engagement of a book club with a welcome break from preparation. You supply the drinks and stemware; assign a guest to bring the snacks.

2. Remember that film you were just dying to talk about afterwards? Here's your chance. Invite your cinemaphile friends to take in a screening together (at the theater or at your place), then retire to the living room to share your thoughts. Do a little research beforehand so you can throw out the first juicy observation.

3. Most book clubs tackle one title at a time. But if the discussion is lively, many other books, films and cultural touch points enter the conversation. Give your group the benefit of these recommendations by taking notes and emailing around an "as we discussed" list every few sessions.

4. Better yet, treat each attendee to a spiffy russell+hazel Pocket Book. It's one way to encourage everyone to note their observations while they read, ensuring there's plenty to discuss when you meet. And did they notice how nicely the Pocket Book fits into the back of a hardcover?

5. Staying on top of the news is one thing. Understanding the real issues is another. Between books, try switching the focus to current events. If you know someone knowledgeable about local politics, international affairs or this or that major event, invite them to share their knowledge with your club. It's a great way to gain insight beyond the headlines or a 30-second TV news clip.

6. Afraid of treading into controversial waters? Don't shy away from a little debate in the pursuit of understanding. Make the goal of your club to be smarter about the great ideas of the day—whether they're unfolding between book covers or out in the world—and participants will stay true to this spirit. Just dispense the martinis carefully.
